Solar panels
When people talk about solar energy, they are usually thinking of photovoltaic (PV) panels.
These panels, which convert energy from the sun into electricity, have been around for many years in calculators, watches and other small electrical devices, and more recently people have been seeking to meet an increasing proportion of their electricity needs by these means.
PV panels are usually made up of very many solar cells, fabricated from semiconductor material. The way the panels work is by photons of light from the sun striking these cells, energising the electrons of the material in such a way that they begin flowing in a certain direction, producing a current that can be drawn off for external use.
Panels are generally installed on the roof of a property and connected directly to the electrical system. However, ground-standing installations are also an option.
In the UK, in addition to the financial incentive to solar power offered by the Government’s Clean Energy Cashback Scheme, homes generating their own electricity can sell back any excess to the National Grid.
